Gender-affirming Surgical Readiness

Fusion offers gender-affirming surgical readiness assessments for adults pursuing gender-affirming surgeries. Our practice has experience providing these assessments in a thoughtful, respectful, and affirming way, including in the “second assessor” role for surgeries such as orchiectomy, vaginoplasty, hysterectomy, metoidioplasty, and phalloplasty. These assessments are available for adults and are not currently offered for children or youth.

The process involves clinical interviewing, with questions focused on the diagnostic, eligibility, and readiness criteria outlined in the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Standards of Care, Version 7 (SOC-7). Additional time is spent reviewing documentation, consulting with relevant healthcare providers as appropriate, and completing the written report. Although the WPATH SOC-8 update was released in 2022—importantly shifting its language, broadening coverage, and reducing barriers to care—OHIP continues to operate using SOC-7 and requires two referral letters.

We understand the importance of this process and that it may feel vulnerable. Our goal is to help ground your journey with care that is supportive, transparent, and affirming.
